St. John's Trail Head Adventure At Cross Barge Canal

Good morning to all. We are at St. John's Trail Head, near Cross Florida Barge Canal.
The first thing I want to do is say "Thank you Dick" for giving us the info on this site.

Cross Florida Barge Canal is a good site to see.  Not many campers.
The Cross Florida Barge Canal was a canal project to connect the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean across Florida for barge traffic. Two sections were built but the project was cancelled, mainly for environmental reasons. It is now a protected green belt corridor, one mile (1.6 km) wide in most places. Named after the leader in the opposition against the canal, Marjorie Harris Carr, it is known as the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway.  (info from ocalabuyersagent)
The canal was a bad idea for the  for Florida's water supply which flows underground through the spongy limestone .
It was halted by President Nixon after  money was spent as the canal land was bought, dams built, and some canal  before it was stopped .
This is a view of the campgrounds here at St. John's Trail Head.

Once again "Thanks Dick". From DesertDale and Kitfoxgal
